Have you ever walked into a room and just felt something? Like the walls weren’t just there—they were part of the mood? That’s what Venetian Plaster does. And lately, it’s everywhere… in magazines, on Pinterest, and probably in that dreamy home you saved to your “someday” board.
So what’s all the fuss about? And why am I, a texture-loving artist and decorative finisher, still completely smitten with it after all these years?
Let’s talk about it.

🖌️ What Is Venetian Plaster Anyway?
At its core, Venetian Plaster is a smooth, layered wall finish that has a soft glow and beautiful movement. It was originally used in old Italian villas—and trust me, it still brings that same elegant feel today.
There are two main types:
Lime-based plaster – All-natural, breathable, and a bit more traditional
Acrylic-based plaster – A lot more user-friendly (and what I use in my free tutorial!)
Now here’s something interesting… people often ask for lime plaster, but when I show them samples side-by-side? Nine times out of ten they pick acrylic. Why? Because it’s smoother, easier to work with, and still has that gorgeous, layered look.
A little insider tip: Some of those Pinterest photos that say “lime-based”? They’re actually acrylic! 😄

✨ Why Everyone’s Falling in Love with It
Venetian Plaster is one of those finishes that just elevates a space—without being loud about it. It’s:
Timeless, but totally on-trend
Subtle, yet full of depth and movement
Calming, elegant, and surprisingly approachable for DIYers
Once you see it in person, it’s hard not to imagine it on every wall in your house (don’t worry, I’ve been there too).

🏡 Where Should You Use It?
I get asked this a lot! And the truth is, Venetian Plaster looks good just about anywhere. But here are a few of my favorites:
Fireplace walls (yes please!)
Powder rooms (a little drama in a small space is magic)
Range hoods (stunning in a kitchen)
Bedrooms (especially behind the bed)
Entryways (because first impressions count!)
It’s a beautiful way to add texture without going over the top.
