Simple Ways to Refresh Your Home for Fall (Without Going Full Pumpkin Spice)

As much as I love a cozy pumpkin-scented candle and a good plaid throw, sometimes a full “pumpkin spice takeover” just isn’t the vibe. Fall decorating doesn’t have to mean orange everywhere — it can be soft, warm, and elegant while still feeling seasonal.

If you’re craving that subtle shift into fall but don’t want to pack up all your summer favorites just yet, here are a few simple ways to bring that autumn feeling into your home with texture, color, and a touch of artistry.

1. Add a Touch of Gold and Warmth

This time of year, the sunlight takes on a golden hue that feels magical. I love reflecting that indoors with warm tones — think muted gold, honey, blush, and soft olive.

Even just a few art pieces in these tones can change the entire feel of a room. My Golden Hour Bloom series was inspired by that light — those soft sunflower petals that almost glow when the sun hits them. Place a few small shelf sitters or a textured canvas where the light naturally spills in during the day, and you’ll feel that same cozy warmth.

2. Bring Nature Inside

You don’t need a full fall floral arrangement — even a few stems of faux eucalyptus or dried grasses mixed with faux sunflowers for a soft, collected look can bring life to your space.

One of my favorite pieces right now is a painted watering can filled with golden blooms and leafy greens. It’s such a cheerful statement for an entryway or coffee table, and it transitions beautifully from late summer into fall.

3. Add Texture

Wherever You Can

Texture adds instant coziness without adding clutter. You can do this through throw blankets, baskets, layered pillows — or even through your artwork.

I’ve always believed texture tells a story. When you run your fingers across a painting and feel that layered surface, it feels alive. It’s one of the reasons I started incorporating ShimmerFrost and metallic plaster into my art — it catches the light and brings movement to the piece. It’s a quiet luxury that feels special in every season.  Using up-cycled 2×4’s like I did in the textured sunflower shelf sitters is a great way to repurpose and keep these items from the land fill.

4. Mix in Metallics for a Subtle Sparkle

Gold, brass, and even soft copper accents can elevate your fall décor. Think candle holders, picture frames, or a mirror that reflects that warm autumn glow.

If you’re not into sparkle, try adding metallics through art finishes or decorative details. My sunflower pieces often include touches of soft metallic shimmer — not over the top, but just enough to make them dance in the light.

5. Keep It Personal and Playful

At the end of the day, decorating for fall should feel like you. Don’t feel like you have to follow every trend or switch out all your décor. Maybe your fall look is more “sunflower and gold” than “pumpkin and orange” — and that’s perfectly fine.

I always tell people: if it makes you smile when you walk into the room, it’s the right choice. Decorating for fall is all about layering — color, texture, and meaning. If you’re drawn to the creative side of home styling and want more inspiration, take a peek at The Turquoise Iris Journal. It’s one of my favorite places to recharge creatively and connect with other artists who see beauty in everyday spaces.

Closing Thoughts

Fall decorating can be simple, meaningful, and budget-friendly when you start with what you already love. Add warmth, texture, and just a hint of shimmer, and you’ll create a space that feels inviting and refreshed — no pumpkin spice required.
